Sorry to hear that the season is lost.
I like the idea of going forward with a more open format based around a "club night." the league in Austin is run on a club night basis with no fixed schedule. Those around on the club evening and those who set up matches around the club night play their games and enter them into the database.
At the end of the season, those teams that have played a minimum of four matches qualify for the play offs with ranking based on W-L-D. Coaches can have multiple teams qualify but can only field one team in the play-offs.
I will need to look and see what restrictions there are inducements but I think the main one is no Star Players in the play-offs. I will get a copy of their rules tonight and post them or highlights and maybe we can adopt what works best for us.
See you around the pitch,
Frank

I am also sad to hear the season was lost. It seemed to be turning around until the recent delays, not that those delays disrupted the integrity of the league...even illegal merc use could've been rectified. Club nights will be tough for me. I have no idea when I'll be in town on any given week. The twice'ish a month planned game worked well for me. I'll do what I can to do what I can.

Hope you'll be able to make it now and again hobbs, I've learned a lot playing you and have a lot more to learn. We'll have to see what people support but I'll probably set up a weekend day once a month and with luck we'll have another couple of scheduled days/nights along the way as well. Already thinking a day/night at both Atomic and Dark Matters on the west side, and I think V was talking about setting up a slot out at Colpar East. Give us a week or so to get our sh*t together and keep an eye out we want to make this fun and build it up. Any chance you could commit to a once month slot up at Total Escape Frankus? I'd sure try to come up once in a while.

The reason I suggest a club night is so that there is some continuity. Having the league rotate shops may not be ideal from a continuity standpoint but I think it will be great way to get exposure.
I will commit to gaming twice a month if we can get traction. I believe TEG has open games/board games on Wednesday nights so that would be a good day to meet there. I will also drive to other shops to make sure we have games going as best as I can.
Maybe do a 1st Wednesday at Atomic/Dark Matter, 3rd Wednesday at TEG and have one Saturday/Sunday a month at one of the shops for a bigger gathering. And as always, give coaches the option to meet up for games at any mutually agreeable time place outside of "club night."

That's the idea! I am hoping to get some geographic spread to try and rope in more players. Metalhed and I are thinking we will host 2 nights a month, one at Dark Matters, one at Atomic, we'll see what we can arrange. If you can get it rolling at TEG and V can get going at Colpar East, we'll have a lot of options. Just need to coordinate a little and there should be somewhere we can go and meet up with club members once a week, though it may take a drive. Set nights are MUCH easier to plan around for most of us. As usual, if you just want to get a game in, contact somebody, but lets try and play in public so we can promote the club ahead of the fall release.

I like it, we just need to adopt some rules to ensure consistency across matches. Maybe run the league all summer with a couple of mini tournaments and then have a big tournament to start the fall, ie coincide with the release of the new box set.

Chrikey
Well, a league where more than 2 people get together at once is the important part to me. I only know around half of you by name at this point. I've basically been meeting some Tom, Richard, or Harold every couple weeks at some place, saying hello my name's Tiberius, and promptly breaking out the dice & figures.
No community feel, so how to develop that? I think a set night(s) is a necessity. 2nd Tuesday (or whatever the hell night) is Blood Bowl night! That would be good.
Side note: I enjoy teaching stuff like this so I'd be up for noob tutorials if that came about.
Side note: Needless to say I misunderstood the star player rule :/

Beerox, I agree, I would like it to be about more than just two guys meeting up. The idea of the club night, is that there would be nights where we can meet up as a group and sort out games. I think we would want to do a roll call for the club nights so we know who's showing up and make sure we have even numbers. I think by having them about two weeks apart, it give people flexibility in their schedules to attend on a regular basis.
I know I've been going on about Wednesday but I think I'll make a poll and we can see what night is best for everyone to make it easier to figure out a night. Of course, it will also have to depend on the stores we're looking at and what they have on their calendars.

So the poll launched before I could add the weekend but I'll assume that's the interwebz way of telling me you guys don't want to see me on your weekends.

Oh yeah, make sure to let others know who don't frequent the forum to vote and to contribute to the thread.

Beerox, Star Players were allowed, mercs and wizards were not. I'm not sure if Brandon considered Star Players mercs or not, but the two are different items within the game. It's possible this was the case, in which case, his frustration is justified, but you did nothing wrong....unless you hired mercs (players with skills for extra cost).

We were also talking about the "house rules". What do you think of just going with the rulebook? Only house rule being no Illegal Procedure, just remind them, and everything else is fine. Let's face it the rules at this point have been poured over again and again, who are we to screw with them? There may be times that we create house rules that throw an imbalance into the games and don't allow the weaker teams to compete evenly. There would be a lot I'd have to bone up on (like wizards) but why not take on the width and breadth of the rules? Would that make it easier for new players, or lots harder?

I will set up at least one weekend day a month, less stress and maybe even time to get a couple of games in rather than rushing through one.

Most house rules clarify league progression. Not many touch the skills too much. IP is the one rule mostly eliminated, but some do use it. Modifications to the timer rule happen too, mostly something like each coach gets 30 minutes per half using a chess clock or the like. Spiraling expenses can be modified to reflect the level of teams in a given league. Mercs, wizards, and star players are sometimes used, sometimes not...depends on what you want to do with your money. Personally, I've only used a wizard once, and it was only in response to the other coach doing the same. Special play cards aren't use that often. Other house rules handle preseason, playoffs, or the championship match and the circumstances surrounding those games. So if you're going to go straight from the rule book, be prepared for people to use the above mentioned items, some are particularly nasty (the special play cards).
